FAMILY PHORIDAE
Paul L.Th. Beuk Version date: 25-01-2022 15:19

Anevrina urbana (Meigen, 1820)
Diagnosis. Very small to small flies (0.5-6.0 mm); general posture somewhat arched, body colour ranging from pale whitish, yellowish or greyish to velvety black. Head with large eyes; palpi prominent, even when small; third antennal segment often more or less cylindrical and arista directed sideways. Wings with characteristically reduced venation, C and radial sector well developed; remaining veins weak and emanating from close to radial sector. Legs typically with stout femora; hind femora often somewhat laterally flattened. The abdomen may have reduced tergites in some females.

Biology. The different life-strategies for the Phoridae belong to the most diverse for a single family among the insects. They are found in nearly all terrestrial habitats and some aquatic ones. Some recorded modes of life are saprophagy (including insect frass, bat dung, mammalian corpses [even buried ones], dead snails, etc.), fungivory, commensalism (refuse in nests of social Hymenoptera), parasitism (e.g., on earthworms, slug eggs, snails, millipedes, larvae and/or pupae of different insects orders) and phytophagy (leafmining, roots, seed capsules, flower buds, fruits). Adults are often found running on leaves but can be found on virtually any surface. In some species the males form swarms.

Notes
Note 1 The name parcepilosa has page priority, but Schmitz (1949: 227) as first reviser adopted the name glabra.
Note 2 Synonymy by Disney (2012: 217).
Note 3 An ICZN opinion is required for suppression of fulvipalpis cf. Disney (1991: 149). Schmitz (1953: 288-289) states in a short discussion that the name fulvipalpis should not be considered as a taxonomic name but rather a description of specific variation (aberration).
Note 4 Questionable synonym cf. Disney (1991: 149).
Note 5 This former subgenus of Borophaga was elevated to generic status by Brown (1992: 37), who concluded that this group was related more closely to other genera than to Borophaga. Disney (1994: 269) rejected this proposal and was followed in several other recent catalogues (Chandler, 1998a; Presscher, 1999).
Note 6 Kerophora was reduced to subgeneric level by Disney (1994: 280).
Note 7 This synonym was not listed by Disney (1991: 156).
Note 8 Disney (1999a: 1172, 1201) states that most of the published records of M. pulicaria refer to M. angusta and that M. sinuata is the same species as the true M. pulicaria.
Note 9 Again added as hibernica by Schmitz & Beyer (1965b: 578).
Note 10 The year of description is corrected to 1935. Disney (1991: 167) seems to accept the publication by Schmitz (1934: lx) as valid description. However, no distinguishing characters are mentioned for this species: ’..., staat dicht bij M. angustipennis Lundbck. en superciliata Wood. Zij overwintert in konijnenholen, blijkbaar als imago, wat bij Phoriden zelden voorkomt.’ [’..., close to M. angustipennis Lundbck. and superciliata Wood. It hibernates in rabbit burrows, apparently as adult, which rarely occurs among phorids’.]
Note 11 Again added as subnitida by Schmitz & Beyer (1965a: 517).
Note 12 The name ’Phora giraudii Egger’ was fixed as a name in the Sciaridae by designation of a lectotype (see Menzel & Mohrig, 2000: 144). Thus the name is unavailable for the species known as Megaselia giraudii (Egger). Here the first available name, Megaselia rata (Collin in Wood, 1908) is introduced to the list.
Note 13 This species was transferred to Kerophora by Brown (1992) but Disney (1994: 280) argued that is should be considered premature because the male genitalia are very different from other Kerophora species.
Note 14 Material examined: LIMBURG: Herkenbosch (NP De Meinweg, N. of Lange Luier [205.7-353.1], 2 [m], 2 [f]: 20-31.viii.2012, leg. P. Thomas NHMM mt [NHMM ALC]), Maastricht (Natuurhistorisch Museum [1761-3172], indoors, 1 [m]: 1.viii.2013, leg. P.L.Th. Beuk [NHMM ALC]; 1 [m]: 6.vi.2014, leg. P.L.Th. Beuk [NHMM ALC]), Vlodrop (6 km E. of Herkenbosch: Crayhof[, N-rand broekbos bij Roode Beek] [208.75-351.35]: 1 [m]: 6-15.viii.2013, Leg. T. Lenders, Malaise trap [NHMM ALC]; 1 [m], 1 [f]: 4-15.x.2013, Leg. T. Lenders, Malaise trap [NHMM ALC]).
Note 15 Material examined: LIMBURG: Vlodrop (6 km E. of Herkenbosch: Crayhof[, N-rand broekbos bij Roode Beek] [208.75-351.35]: 1 [f]: 6-15.viii.2013, Leg. T. Lenders, Malaise trap [NHMM ALC]).
Note 16 The name pauciseta has page priority, but Schmitz (1929b: 200) as first reviser adopted the name dudai.
Note 17 Again added as vitrea by Schmitz (1949: 193).
Note 18 Disney & Chapman (2001) noted that females of inaequalis always seemed to be accompanied by males of vitrea. Their suspicion is that the females of inaequalis sensu Schmitz are in fact females of vitrea and that the true female of inaequalis was later described as M. chandleri Disney, 1987. Disney (pers. comm.) confirms that the material from Valkenburg illustrated by Schmitz is indeed identical to the female of vitrea.
Note 19 Schmitz (1955: 326) does not include the Netherlands in the distribution of stictica. Possibly this species should be removed from the Dutch list as he gives it as a boreo-montane species.
Note 20 This species was erroneously recorded from the Netherlands by Brown (1987: 285), who wrongly placed the type locality in the Netherlands. Schmitz (1920: 134) even specifically states 'Nicht in Limburg' ['Not in Limburg'].
Note 21 This species was recorded from the Netherlands in error by Borgmeier (1968: 122) and this record was repeated by Disney (1991: 164). Disney (pers. comm.) informed me of the error.
Note 22 Recorded as ’indistincta Schmitz in litt.’ by De Meijere (1928a: 29) and later deleted by Anonymous (1928: 309) and De Meijere (1935: 226), but without mentioning to which species the specimen(s) did belong.
Note 23 Schmitz (1933: 90) recorded this species as ? rupestris from the Netherlands, but did not include it as Dutch in his later lists.
Note 24 Recorded by De Meijere (1928a: 31) and later deleted by De Meijere (1935: 226), but without mentioning to which species the specimen did belong.
Note 25 Recorded as ’transversalis Schmitz in litt.’ by De Meijere (1928a: 31) and later deleted by Anonymous (1928: 309) and De Meijere (1935: 226), but without mentioning to which species the specimen(s) did belong.
Note 26 Schmitz (1943a: 158) clarified his previous interpretation of excisa, referring part of his material to dentata and the remaining part to excisa with octobris as synonym but without giving the Netherlands in the distribution of dentata. It was still listed by Disney (1991: 199).
