Diagnosis. Small to medium-sized flies (3.0-6.5 mm) with slender body. Head small, rounded to elongate; antennae small; vibrissae and ocellar setae absent. Thorax narrow and somewhat flattened; humeral and mesopleural setae absent. Wings narrow and membrane (in Dutch species) clear; C without breaks; Sc complete and reaching C. Legs thin and long; preapical setae on tibiae absent.
Biology. Biology poorly known. Adults can be found in wet places, on flowers along water or on tree trunks. Larvae develop in decaying vegetable matter, in root nodules of various leguminous plants, in mushrooms or under the bark of decaying wood.
