FAMILY PALLOPTERIDAE
Jan Willem A. van Zuijlen, Bob van Aartsen and Paul L.Th. Beuk Version date: 03-07-2013 16:01

Diagnosis. Medium-sized (2.5-7.0 mm) greyish, reddish to brownish yellow or pale yellow, rather sparsely bristled, acalyptrate flies. Head with one pair of reclinate orbital setae; vibrissae absent. Wings maculated in most species, C with subcostal break. Legs without dorsal preapical setae on tibiae. Females with an elongate, piercer-type ovipositor, varying from narrow to very broad. Sexual dimorphism is only very rarely exhibited.

Biology. Adults are usually diurnal, but some species have only a very short active period in the late afternoon. Adults live in or close to shady environments and may be found in forests, between shrubs and bushes, often close to water. Larvae live in stems of Umbelliferae, Graminae, Juncaceae, in flower heads of Asteraceae, or under the bark of various trees. The larvae living under bark are thought to be feeding on beetles or mycelium. There is still discussion about whether the other species are phytophagous, carnivorous or both.

General references. Martinek (1977 [biology]), J.F. McAlpine (1981 [systematics], 1987b [general]), Merz (1998 [general, key]), Morge (1967 [systematics, biology, key], 1984 [catalogue]).

References to the local fauna. Van Aartsen (2001b), H. de Jong & Van Aartsen (2007), Van Zuijlen (1996h).

Remarks. Original data by Van Zuijlen & Van Aartsen, corrections and updates (publication years marked in red) by Beuk.
